Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiatives (AWWDI) has spoken out on the need for integration and mainstreaming of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, CRPD, Sustainable development Goals (SDG), Disability Acts, SRHR of women and girls with disabilities by all the Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) with specific budget rights on budget preparation.
The Executive Director and National Co-ordinator of AWWDI, Mrs. Patience Ogolo Dickson made the call at a roundtable discussion on Inclusion and Implementation of Budgeting for Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) of Women and Girls with Disabilities(WGWDs) with relevant Ministries and Agencies.
She added that Nigeria cannot afford to be behind on WGWDs issues.
The meeting which was held at National Human Rights Commission Hall, Maitama, Abuja, with support from African Women Development Fund was well attended by Government representatives, Persons with Disabilities, and dignitaries.
At the event, Women and Girls with Disabilities (WGWDs) shared their experiences with SRHR issues at different Government Hospitals.
At the meeting, several ideas were put forward on how to advocate for budgeting which include Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights of Women and Girls With Disabilities, right from MDAs to the National Assembly.
The representative of National Assembly Committee Clerk on Health shed light on how to advocate and position the aforementioned issues before the law makers, and how to monitor the process from MDAs to the National Assembly.
The second session of the meeting focused on discussions about developing an action plan for advocacy on these issues.
The action plan includes: Advocacy visits to MDAs and Ministries, request letters indicating inclusion in budgeting, attending budget hearings, attending budget preparation meetings, follow –up letters and reports, etc.
