Inclusive Friends Association has presented the Persons with Disabilities policy priority agenda brief to the governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Akeredolu.

The executive director, Grace Jerry presented the policy to the governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the erstwhile PDP candidate Eyitayo Olayinka Jegede at the signing of the peace accord before the October 10, 2020 Ondo State Governorship elections.

The Agenda brief was developed by the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) as an advocacy tool for the disability community and disability groups in Ondo State to advocate for key public policy priorities to be integrated within the manifestos of political parties in Nigeria and hold government accountable to their words.

The policy priority agenda titled “Priority Policy Disability Inclusion agenda mapping for persons with Disability” which was supported by National Endowment for Democracy, had identified the existing gaps associated with PWDs in Ondo State.

The findings extracted from the policy made available to Inclusive News Network are low rate of awareness of the Prohibition of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disability Act 2018, the implementation of the requirement of provisions in part II Sec 3 which is Right of Access to Public Premises, hindered the success of engagement with some of the key stakeholders.

To mitigate the challenges associated with the gap the group demanded, Inclusion and participation of PWDs in electoral processes, improved access to education for PWDs, improved access to health care for PWDs, enhanced employment and empowerment of PWDs, enhanced liberty and rights of PWDs, increased access to media for PWDs during elections.

The group also made the same policy priority agenda available to Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki.

The group calls on the government and stakeholders of both states to commit to investment in this policy and be accountable for these priority areas for the next four (4) years.
