Queen Maria Okese, the Miss River State representative at the Most Beautiful Deaf Girl in Nigeria was yesterday, 1st November, 2019 crowned the Miss Deaf Nigeria after having faced stiff competition from 13 contestants from different states in Nigeria who were present during the programme at Standard Bearer school in Lekki, Lagos State.
Before Maria was crowned the Queen, the judges had selected five contestants out of thirteen to determine the winners of the competition. Those five selected were Columba Chinazo of Anambra State, Blessing Iyasere of Lagos State, Maria Okese of River State representative, Odedina Rebecca of Lagos State and Funmilayo Ogundari of Ogun State.
After analysing answers to the same question given to the five selected contestants by the judges, Chinazo of Anambra State was declared the 2nd runner-up of the competition while the 1st runner-up was given to Odedina Rebecca of Lagos State. There were tensions and jublications among the audiences when the judges finally announced Maria Okese as the winner of the most beautiful Deaf girl in Nigeria.
In an interview with Inclusive News Network (INN), when asked how she feels about being the 2nd runner-up and what she plans to do with her new position, Chinazo said “I’m very happy to win a crown. I’ll use my position to help other girls to be a model like me”.
She added “I love dancing and have different kind of skills I believe I could use to teach female students in school. For example, I can teach makeup and bead making”
Odedina Rebecca, the first runner-up at the just concluded MBDGN told INN that she doesn’t feel discouraged but happy and give glory to God with a joyful soul for helping her throughout the struggle.
When asked what she plans to use her new position to do, she said “I’ve to work hard and fight for the Deaf rights”
When asked how she feels about representing Nigeria at Miss Deaf International in USA in 2020 and what we should expect from her? she said “I feel excited and thankful, I will bring the crown home”
The winner of the competition, Maria Okese told INN that she was so happy when she was announced winner. Reason being that she is beautiful and its an encouragement to other Deaf ladies to dream like her. She added “there is ability in disability”
When asked what she plans to do with her new position, she said “i will use my power to help support people with disabilities in Nigeria and motivate them to dream and come out with a good future”
Columba Chinazo, the 2nd runner-up of the competition will receive a sum of #20,000 and represent Nigeria at the 2020 Miss Deaf Africa pageants. While first runner-up, Odedina Rebecca is also awarded a sum of #20,000. She will be employed automatically by the management of Standard Bearer School in Lekki after she completes her courses in University. She is also expected to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Miss Deaf International in USA.
The winner of the competition, Maria Okese will represent Nigeria at the 2020 Miss Deaf World in Prague, Czech Republic. The current winner of the Miss Deaf World is 21 years old from India, Vidisha Baliyan.
