NYSC state coordinator responds to Deaf Corpers, promises sign language interpreter and better Placement

The Deaf corper, Kadir Abdulfatai, who lamented his ordeal in the hands of uniformed soldiers in permanent orientation camp in Kusala Dam Karaye, Kano state, got positive response to his letter written to the state camp cordinator Mallam Ladan Baba.

INN learnt that Abdulfatai had written formal letter of protest to the NYSC state coordinator outlining the challenges faced by Deaf Corpers in the camp.

INN gathered from the statement made available to it that the state coordinator, Baba, responded to the letter received by him and granted Abdulfatai and another deaf corper, Nura Umar Ibrahim the privilege to meet with him. He showed solidarity with the deaf corpers while sympathising with them on their challenges in permanent orientation Kusala Dam Karaye, Kano state.

“Despite the challenges we face in NYSC camp, I decided to write a letter of formal report to the NYSC state coordinator. He received the letter and treated it without delay.”

“The purpose of the letter was aimed at addressing the challenges we face in the NYSC camp.

As soon as he approved the letter, he directed it to the camp commandant for recognition. We were then informed by one of the NYSC officials that the state coordinator invited us to his residence inside the camp.”, Abdulfatai explained.

Abdulfatai added that they honoured the state cordinator’s invitation and he was glad to receive them as they spoke on issues concerning their challenges in camp

“the coordinator lamented upon reading the letter, he felt our pain. He said he understands the needs of a person with special needs, because he has the passion in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. He also said that after he finished his secondary education, he planned to gain admission to Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo, to study Special Education, but it wasn’t fortunate for him.”, Abdulfatai narrated

Expressing delight at the outcome of the meeting, Abdulfatai said if the state coordinator was aware of the presence of Deaf corpers in the camp, he would have given them special consideration

INN also learnt that the coordinator was emphatic about making them comfortable while in camp and for the duration of the camping.

Abdulfatai described the outcome of the meeting as “great” while adding that the NYSC state coordinator will look into the service of a sign language interpreter for the Deaf corpers and also promised them a favourable and conducive Place of Primary Assignment (PPA)

The coordinator equally assured them that their desire for relocation would be granted if so desired”

“Mallam Ladan Baba is very friend to us having persons with disabilities at heart. He is worthy of emulation and a sensitive-disability friend”, elated Abdulfatai concluded
